Pride in Her Work as a Public Servant

Pride in Her Work as a Public Servant

My grandmother lived in Washington, DC, where she worked for the federal government. She served for a long time as a secretary at the General Services Administration, and she later went to work as secretary to the head of the wage division of the Cost of Living Council. My dad recalls her going to work first thing in the morning and not getting off work until as late as 9 pm each night. When I think of my grandmother’s career, I think of the pride she took in her work as a public employee. I also think of how it helped enable her to provide for her family. She and my grandfather were able to raise my dad and my aunt in a modest, middle class home, where they could gain a good education.
